It will be a busy week for Northeast Georgia area tennis teams as 29 teams advanced to the Georgia High School Association state playoffs.
First round action must be completed by Thursday, April 21.
Of the 29 teams, six come in as region champions -- the Buford boys and girls in Class 6A, the North Hall girls and Cherokee Bluff boys in Class 3A, and the Riverside Military boys and Rabun County girls in Class 2A -- with six others coming in as No. 2 seeds and playing host in the opening round.
Among some of the more intriguing matchups, the Jefferson girls, the No. 4 seed out of Region 8-4A, will open against defending state champion Marist on the road. The Flowery Branch boys will open the playoffs against the defending champ Marist boys as well.
The Dawson County girls, the No. 4 seed out of Region 7-3A, also will open against a defending state champion, traveling to Westminster. The Lumpkin County boys also will open against Westminster, the defending boys champion
The Commerce girls advanced to the Elite 8 in 2021 and will open the playoffs at home against Bowdon. The Lady Tigers were the only Northeast Georgia-area team to get out of the second round in 2021.
