A 29-year-old man hiking with his girlfriend in the Russell Wildlife Management Area fell to his death near a popular trailhead.
Habersham County Coroner Kasey McEntire identified the man as Kelly Heath Boyd.
"Mr. Boyd and his girlfriend found this trail when they came up to this area for vacation," McEntire told AccessWDUN in a phone interview. "They were hiking home on the Tabor Falls trailhead off Sellers Rd. and Mt. Airy when they got separated."
McEntire was unable to pinpoint the exact location but said at some point, the man fell down the falls and into the river.
"Once his girlfriend located him, she was able to pull him from the water, and then she called 911," he explained.
McEntire was unsure of the exact distance that Boyd fell. Preliminary investigations show Boyd suffered internal injuries and "a possible head injury."
Authorities took Boyd's body to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Medical Examiners Office in Decatur for further investigation.
