Virtual learning opened parents' eyes to 'disturbing' classroom curriculum, says Jones

Incumbent State Senator and candidate for the GOP nomination for Lt. Governor, Burt Jones, told WDUN's Newsroom that the legislation giving parents a say in their child's education is necessary.

"I think we need to empower our classroom teachers and parents," Jones said. "It's very disturbing, some of the things from sex education to critical race theory and things of that nature, especially teaching that at such a young age."

He believes the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced students to learn from home, allowed parents to see what kids are being taught.

One bill addressing a parent's role is the so-called "Parents' Bill of Rights." Lawmakers granted final approval on that bill on Friday, and Gov. Kemp has pledged to sign it. The law would give parents the right to review the curriculum taught to their children. The measure does not cover supplemental material like news articles and websites.

Jones also touted school choice and other voucher programs as possible avenues to improve K-12 schools in the state.

"I think we need to look deeper," he said. "There's not a silver bullet that can solve the problems in education."
