A man from Auburn was killed Friday evening in a house fire in the city.
According to a press release from Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services, firefighters responded at 11:20 p.m. to the home on Hayes Road in Auburn. A 9-1-1 caller reported hearing a loud pop and walked outside to find a large amount of smoke.
Fire crews attempted to attack the fire from the inside of the home by entering through the garage. Crews found the victim on the floor after opening the garage door. The victim was quickly removed from the garage to the driveway and was pronounced dead.
The fire was brought under control, but the house sustained heavy fire damage. A large portion of the second floor collapsed due to the flames.
Fire investigators believe the fire started in a downstairs bedroom. The fire appears to be accidental, but investigators have not determined an exact cause.
The victim's body was turned over to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office to determine a cause of death. No other injuries were reported.
