A driver was killed Thursday morning after their SUV was hit by a freight train near downtown Duluth.
According to a press release from the Duluth Police Department, the vehicle was stuck on railroad tracks near South Peachtree Street and Hardy Street. Police have identified the man as 39-year-old Guangyun Jin. He was a ride-share driver and was driving a Nissan Pathfinder.
Jin's passenger survived after they were able to exit the car prior to the collision. The driver was allegedly trying to get the vehicle off the tracks as the passenger escaped.
Duluth police say the train operator noticed the car, sounded the horn and immediately activated the emergency stopping system.
However, Jin never exited his vehicle and was struck on the driver's side. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are still investigating the collision.
