Brenau event puts emphasis on the 'joy in doing'

For an eighth year, the Women's College at Brenau University is hosting an event to showcase the three inspiring and successful women.

The Women's Leadership Colloquium (WLC) will be held Friday, Mar. 18, at the John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts.

"We really want to bring in women who are movers and shakers," said Dr. Debra Dobkins, Dean of the Women's College, who will host the event. "We want them to come in and be able to share their ideas, their experience with members of the community, but also with our students."

Dobkins said the event will be held in-person, but there will also be a virtual option for guests who prefer that.

The Keynote speaker is Dr. Belle S. Wheelan, who serves as President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. "That's the body that accredits all of the universities in our region," said Dobkins.

Retired health care teacher Robin Dudley is the alumni association speaker, and the featured guest speaker is Cay M. Drew, the leadership development facilitator for IBM.

The theme of the 2022 event is "the joy in doing." According to Dobkins, it's a quote written by the university's founder H.J. Pierce.

"This has been a time for all of us when it's been sometimes hard to find your joy, and live in that joy and to find joy in doing for others and in making things happen," Dobkins told WDUN. "[But] we're ready to get our joy on."

She believes that the value of women hearing from other successful women is invaluable.
