Girls basketball playoffs: Rabun Co. advances to 2nd 2A finals in 6 seasons

MILLEDGEVILLE — It will be an all-Region 8-2A final next week for the Class 2A championship.

Rabun County used a 17-0 first quarter run to take a commanding lead and then held off several second half charges to beat Northeast-Macon 50-39 on Friday in the semifinals at Georgia College & State University.

The Lady Wildcats (24-5) will play Region 8-2A foe Elbert County for the title next week. The Lady Blue Devils (27-4) whipped Josey 56-40 in the other semifinal. Tip is set for Thursday, March 10 in Macon at 1 p.m.

It is Rabun County's their second-ever state championship game and its first since 2017. It will the first-ever championship game appearance for Elbert County.

The two teams met three times during the season with Rabun County winning two of the three, including a 47-40 win in the region final two weeks ago.

Against Northeast, Rabun trailed 4-2 early before embarking on its decisive run behind Sophie Woodard’s 9 points and Carley Haban’s 6 points, who helped stake them to a 19-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Wildcats would lead by as much as 24-6 in the second before Northeast rallied to within 27-14 by halftime. The Lady Raiders continued to chip into the lead, closing to within 37-26 heading into the fourth quarter.

But Rabun held off several late runs to advance.

Haban and Woodard each finished with 14 points to lead Rabun County. Gracie Deetz added 13 points for the Lady Wildcats.

Northeast was led by Laniya Richardson with 18 points. Jakia Little had 8 points for the Lady Raiders.
