Hall County Sheriff’s Deputy fired after involvement in fatal crash

A two-vehicle crash on Thursday, March 3 at the intersection of GA 53 and Nix Drive resulted in the fatality of a Gainesville man.

The Georgia State Patrol says that former Hall County Sheriff’s Deputy Aaron Matthew Buchanan, 31-years-old from Homer, was off-duty and driving his marked patrol car on GA 53 south at a high rate of speed. 

Jon William Jones, 84-years-old from Gainesville was traveling east on Nix Drive and stopped his 2006 Lexus at a stop sign. His wife, 81-year-old Doris Claudine Jones, was sitting in the passenger seat.

The front of Buchanan’s Ford Taurus struck the driver's side, killing Jon William Jones. 

Ms. Jones is being treated for her injuries, while Buchanan was treated and released. 

Buchanan was fired by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office hours after the crash. He faces four charges in the case, including vehicular homicide.
