A cadet at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville has been identified as the victim in an apparent murder-suicide in Loganville Thursday morning.

According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, Alexander Postell, 15, was shot by his mother Nicole Strother, 52, in the Bay Crest Court home just before 9 a.m. It appears Strother then shot herself.

Corporal Ryan Winderweedle with Gwinnett County police confirmed Postell was enrolled at Riverside Military Academy.

Riverside Military Academy released the following statement: "The entire Riverside Military Academy family is grieving today the loss of Cadet Alex Postell. Professional grief counselors were on hand as the administration broke this sad news to the Corps of Cadets. The Academy has been in contact with Alex’s father to offer support in the days and weeks ahead. Please join us in praying for the family."

A press statement said Strother's daughter was awoken by a gunshot Thursday morning and went into a bedroom, where she found Postell, her brother, suffering from a gunshot wound and her mother dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Postell was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. A motive is unclear at this time.
