Boys soccer: GHS opens 6-7A with win over West Forsyth

GAINESVILLE — The Gainesville boys opened Region 6-7A play with a tough 2-1 win over West Forsyth on Thursday at City Park Stadium.

Gabriel Ixcoy got Gainesville on the board first 15 minutes in with a goal off an assist from Ozmar Marceleno. It stayed that way until early in the second half despite several good scoring opportunities.

Evan Contreras made it 2-0 Red Elephants (5-2, 1-0 Region 6-7A) in the 50th minute on a goal with an assist from Nelson Fernandez-Ortega.

West Forsyth (2-2-1, 0-1 Region 6-7A) scored with just 50 seconds left in the game but could not get the equalizer.

Keeper Josthin Arellano had three decisive saves early in the game to keep Gainesville in the lead and earned the win in goal.

The Red Elephants next we will play host to Flowery Branch on Tuesday.
