A deputy killed in the line of duty has received the “Deputy of the Year Award.” The American Legion in Jackson County honored Deputy Lena Marshall posthumously Tuesday night and donated a check in her honor.
Deputy Marshall was killed last November after responding to a domestic incident.
Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum says that the donation will go to the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes.
Sheriff Mangum also accepted an Award of Valor on behalf of Deputy Zach Billings, along with a check. Deputy Billings was with Deputy Marshall when she was killed.
Sheriff Mangum called the moment "bittersweet." "This was so very kind of the Legion members," she said. "God bless you all and thank you all for your service."
