Georgia Secretary of State's Office releases Senate runoff audit results

Posted 9:45PM on Thursday 15th December 2022 ( 2 years ago )
The Georgia Secretary of State’s Office released the audit results on Thursday from the 2022 Senate runoff election.

According to a press release from the Secretary of State’s Office, 138 counties participated in the audit this week. Every participating county was required to hand count randomly-selected ballots. The selected ballots made up a minimum of 2% of the ballots cast on Dec. 6.

County elections officials audited 409 batches of ballots representing about 4.6% of all ballots cast in the state.

Out of the 409 batches, 386 (94.4%) had no deviation from the original candidate vote totals and 398 (97.3%) showed no deviation from the number of votes originally reported.

The Secretary of State’s Office said the discrepancies were normal for a hand count audit of that size.

Georgia law requires elections officials to conduct audits following even-year General Elections. However, this non-mandated post-runoff election audit was requested by Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and William S. Duffey, Jr., who is the chair of the State Election Board.

All counties also participated in the required Risk-Limiting Audit after the Nov. 8 2022 General Election. This audit confirmed the outcome of the Secretary of State’s content, where Republican incumbent Raffensperger defeated Democratic Challenger Bee Nguyen.

“I am pleased that we had such strong participation from our counties at a time when everyone is tired and ready to spend time with their families,” Raffensperger said in a press release. “This audit showed once again that our system works and that Georgia’s voting system is accurate.”

The open-source voting system VotingWorks supported the audit with their Arlo auditing software.

“Georgia election officials continue to show their dedication to secure, accurate, and transparent elections by verifying the tabulation of ballots via post-election audits,” VotingWorks Election Implementation Manager Virginia Vander Roest said in a press release. “VotingWorks is proud to support these efforts.”
