AAA is offering a service to transport drunk drivers and their vehicles over the Thanksgiving holiday to keep roads safe during the busy travel period.
In a release, the auto club announced it is activating its "Tow to Go" program in 11 U.S. states, including Georgia. The service allows those who are intoxicated or believe someone near them may be intoxicated to call the service and request a tow truck, which will transport both the driver and the vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius.
AAA Spokeswoman Montrae Waiters said the program is free and is meant to be a last resort for those who can't find another safe way home.
“Alcohol, drugs and even prescription medications can affect your ability to drive. So do not put yourself at risk. Find a designated driver or ridesharing program. If you are tempted to drive impaired, call AAA instead and we’ll get you to a safe location," Waiters said.
The number to call to request a tow is (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246. The program will be active starting at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday and will end at 6:00 a.m. Monday, November 28.
In the release, AAA said appointments can not be made ahead of time and the service may not be available in some rural areas.
The club also said it expects this year to be the third-busiest Thanksgiving weekend on the roads in history.
