Two Northeast Georgia Medical Center physicians received one of the highest honors given by the Medical Association of Georgia at the annual House of Delegates meeting in Savannah.
Dr. Monica Newton received the Lamartine Hardman Cup, which honors physicians who solve a problem in public health, make a discovery in surgery or medicine, or contribute to the science of medicine. The Medical Association of Georgia cited Newton’s commitment to “improving the health of the community” through public health education.
Newton was the first family medicine physician and osteopathic physician to receive the honor, and she was one of a handful for female physicians. She is the program director for Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency program.
“I believe health is primary,” Newton said in a press release. “It is fundamental to educational attainment, rising out of poverty and living the American dream. Focusing on broad spectrum training with an emphasis on population health is what is going to make us better. There is no better place to put my efforts and honestly, there is no better place to highlight the role family physicians play in making Georgia healthier than here at MAG.”.
The Lamartine Hardman Cup was named after former Georgia Governor Lamartine Hardman, a physician, entrepreneur and farmer from Jackson County who served from 1927 to 1931.
Dr. Samuel Le Church received the Physician Award for Community Service. He is a part of Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency, and he practices from Hiawassee. The Medical Association of Georgia recognized Church’s expertise in medical coding, his pioneering COVID vaccine clinics and his lifelong service to the northeast Georgia region.
"It is a privilege to serve my community through medicine and all that it touches outside of the clinic. The great things we have been part of are only possible with the support of our staff and our service-minded community members. This is a recognition for the entire community,” Church said in a press release.
Vice President of Medical Education for Northeast Georgia Health System Dr. John Delzell added his congratulations to Newton and Church, and praised the hospital’s Family Medicine Residency program.
"These awards are great examples of the amazing physicians we have teaching the next generation. Our Family Medicine residents truly are taught by the best physician faculty in the state of Georgia,” Delzell said in a press release.
