Habersham County voters once again voted down a proposed roads and bridges Transportation Local Option Sales Tax.
The additional 1-penny tax would have funded roads and related infrastructure in the county and its municipalities.
Nearly 1,700 more voters cast ballots against the tax than for it.
County leaders had estimated $44 million would have been generated in Habersham County over the life of the tax, with nearly $10 million being divided among the seven cities.
The county’s two political parties had vocally opposed the tax and issued a joint statement mid-September urging residents to vote against it.
This is the second time a county-level TSPLOST has been defeated in Habersham County.
With 55% of voters casting ballots against the roads and bridges TSPLOST, the county’s sales tax will remain at 7%.
Meanwhile, in adjacent Banks County, 55% 0f voters approved continuing that county’s 1-cent road and bridge tax.
