GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Two weeks ago, Chestatee's Shaun Conley announced the 2022 season would be his last as the War Eagles head football coach.

After seven years at the helm of the War Eagles, Conley made it official on Monday, announcing his retirement.

“Coach Shaun Conley has meant so much to the Chestatee community these past seven years. I am thankful for the positive and long-lasting impact he has had on both young people and adults in our building. Our football program is in great shape and well-prepared for what comes next.” Chestatee Principal Christy Cantrell said.

Athletic Director Matt Stowers echoed Cantrell’s sentiments: “Coach Conley has been a valuable asset to the Chestatee community both within the football program and throughout the athletic program as a whole. He has made a lasting impression on this school that will far outlast his time spent here as Head Coach. He has done it the right way.”

Stowers said the search is already under way to finding the program's fifth head coach.

“Our administrative team intends to begin looking right away for a coach who will uphold our core values," Stowers said. "Ideally we would like to have someone in place when we come back from Christmas break. Coach Conley has not left the cupboard bare. Some of the best football in school history still lies ahead of us. The program is in great shape financially and physically. We have one of the premier athletic facilities in the state and student-athletes that love to compete.”

Chestatee finished 2-8 in 2022 in a rebuilding year but does have sophomore quarterback Josh Kermode, who threw for just over 2,000 yards and 11 touchdowns in his first varsity season, expected to return next year.
