The Lawrenceville Arts Commission is seeking artists to submit designs for a community mural along Buford Drive in Downtown Lawrenceville.
Artists have until Dec. 2 to submit their designs to the art commission. In a statement, the Lawrenceville Arts Commission said the chosen artist will be paid $200 for their work. However, artists will have to provide their own supplies.
The artists will be chosen from a preliminary sketch and their work portfolio.
In a statement, the Lawrenceville Arts Commission said submissions should be happy, inspiring, colorful and uplifting. It needs to have a positive welcoming message for visitors, and it can reference historical events. However, people/figures should not be displayed, and the design must be appropriate for all ages and have no social or political references.
“The Arts Commission was founded in 2019, and we began our work in 2020 to find ways to make art a central part of life in the City of Lawrenceville,” chairwoman Aura Leigh Sanders said in a statement. “Our main focus is creative placemaking, where we use art to nurture civic pride and create uplifting, recognizable spaces in the community. Public murals are a great way to do that. And getting residents involved in creating the murals is even better.”
The mural wall is approximately 250 feet long and has a total of 1867 square feet. It is at the intersection of Buford Drive and East Crogan/East Pike.
The selected artist will paint the outline of the mural design in a “paint by number” style with limited colors. This will allow community members to participate in painting as well. The artist will also be required to maintain the mural twice in its first year, and then once a year for five years.
