The driver of a Georgia Department of Corrections van on Wednesday allegedly caused a five-vehicle wreck on Interstate I-985 northbound that injured six people.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, a DOC Chevrolet Express van was transporting a female inmate in the left lane near mile marker 16 at approximately 11:40 a.m.. Traffic had slowed to a stop, and authorities said the DOC van was following a Buick Centry too closely.
The DOC van struck the rear of the Buick, which caused a chain reaction. The Buick was pushed forward and struck the rear of a Nissan Altima.
The Altima spun in a counterclockwise rotation and struck a Toyota Prius that was in the right lane. The Pruis then struck the rear of a utility trailer that was being pulled by a Chevrolet Avalanche.
As the DOC van rotated into the grass median, it also struck the driver’s side of the Altima.
One injury was serious out of the six reported injuries.
The crash is still under investigation.
