A civilian shot a man multiple times Monday morning in Gainesville after that man reportedly threatened multiple people with knives, including two medics.

Lt. Kevin Holbrook with the Gainesville Police Department said authorities initially received a call at about 7:30 a.m. for a man possibly experiencing a mental health crisis off Windward Lane. When officers arrived, the man, who was armed with knives, had made his way to Shades Valley Lane.

The man, later identified as Darrion Suave Fraley,  had reportedly threatened multiple people with the knives, including two female medics who were working a transport that was not related to this incident.

"At which point a citizen intervened and shot the subject multiple times," Holbrook said.

Fraley was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in critical condition.

Holbrook said it was believed that the shooter and one of the medics experienced minor injuries during the encounter with the man.

Fraley also allegedly damaged a number of vehicles, motorcycles and other objects prior to the shooting. Holbrook said Monday evening that Fraley faces charges of criminal attempt to commit murder, obstruction of an EMT (2 counts), possession of a gun during the commission of a crime, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime and aggravated assault.

"We currently have our mental health clinicians on scene at the hospital working with our investigators on this case," Holbrook said. "We do encourage the public as they encounter anyone going through a mental health crisis to contact us immediately ... because typically, the longer the event goes, the more serious it's going to get."

The investigation remained active as of 10 a.m. Monday.
