A routine check of a package delivery hub this week in Gainesville resulted in the seizure of a shipment of fentanyl tablets.
With the help of the Hall County Sheriff’s Office narcotics detection K9, deputies and the Homeland Security Investigations Task Force discovered the package from California that was being shipped to Oakwood.
K9 Timo, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, was taking part in an open-air search of packages arriving at the facility when he alerted on the roughly 575 grams of fentanyl tablets in a package concealed in the original box.
The investigation into the identities of the sender and recipient of the package continues, the sheriff’s office said.
HCSO and the HSI Task Force conduct routine checks with the cooperation of delivery businesses in the county to try to intercept illegal and dangerous drugs before they make their way onto the streets of Hall and neighboring counties.
Agents said handling fentanyl can be dangerous, so protective gear is used if a package is suspected of containing the drug. Narcan also is readily available in case of an accidental exposure.
Sheriff’s office officials say agents have located methamphetamine and marijuana during past searches, but this is the first package that has been found containing fentanyl.
