Athens-Clarke County Police Department Police Chief Cleveland Spruill has announced he will retire from law enforcement and resign from his position as of March 10, 2022.

Spruill was appointed to the position by Athens-Clarke County Manager Blaine Williams in February 2019.

The announcement was made in a Facebook post from the county, which states Williams will appoint an interim police chief in the coming weeks until a permanent replacement is named.

“This decision is not made lightly,” Spruill said in the social media post. “It has been a privilege to work with the Athens-Clarke County community and the fine men and women of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. However, I have decided to end my law enforcement career and move home to Maryland to spend time enjoying retirement with family and friends.”

Spruill has helped the Athens-Clarke County Police Department maintain and reduce crime rates, expanded the department’s take-home vehicle program and improved transparency and community engagement, according to the post.

Spruill is retiring with nearly 35 years of law enforcement experience. He is also an Army veteran.
