Rabid raccoon found in Gillsville area

A dog came in contact with a rabid raccoon in the Gillsville area, and Hall County government officials confirmed the seventh rabies case in the county Thursday morning.

The incident happened in the 4300 block of Joe Chandler Road. As per standard practice, the raccoon was taken to the Georgia Public Health Lab in Decatur for testing. Hall County Animal Control was told Wednesday the raccoon had tested positive for the disease.

Positive alert signs have been posted in the area when the raccoon was found. Anyone who sees an animal acting strangely in the area is urged to contacted Animal Services at 770-531-6830, or Hall County Dispatch during non-working hours at 770-536-8812.

Animal owners are encouraged to vaccinate their pets against rabies. Vaccines are available at the Hall County Animal Shelter for $10. More information on how to schedule a rabies vaccine can be found here
