BACONTON — Towns County set a program record with 42 first half points in route to a 48-20 win over Baconton Charter on Friday night.

Senior running back Kyle Oakes had a huge game with nearly 250 yards and five touchdowns for the Indians (2-1). It was his second 100-yard game of the season and more than doubled his season output.

However, the game did not start as planned as Towns County fumbled the opening snap of the game inside its 9-yard line, and four plays later, the Blazers (0-2) cashed in for a 6-0 lead.

It was all Indians from there. Towns County reeled off 22 consecutive points before the Blazers cut it to 22-12 when 2021 200-meter state champion Greg Reese returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Towns County scored 20 unanswered points to close out the half for a 42-12 lead.

Indians’ coach Jason Roquemore aid they have come a long way in his two-plus years.

“Three years ago, if we had fumbled on the first play it would have been over,” Roquemore said. “But these kids continued to play and believed that they could win. The biggest thing I’m most pleased with was the play of the line and the offense in general.

“But we’re still only three games in and we still have a lot of things we need to get better at. But I definitely like the direction we’re headed.”

Towns County plays host to old Region 8-A foe Lakeview Academy next week.
