The athletic director for Lumpkin County High School has been arrested in what authorities describe as a domestic incident.

Christopher Michael Powell, 39, was arrested around 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6, according to the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office. He has been charged with simple battery, a misdemeanor, and false imprisonment, a felony. Both charges were filed under the Family Violence Act. Powell remained in jail at last report awaiting a first court appearance.

A statement from the Lumpkin County School System acknowledged an arrest of an employee, although the statement did not refer to Powell by name.

"The current information available at this time is that the allegations do not involve any of our district’s students and are a personal matter separate from the employee’s professional capacity," the statement said. "This is an active case with local law enforcement; therefore, Lumpkin County Schools cannot release any additional information. "

The Lumpkin County Board of Education is expected to address the arrest as a personnel issue.
