The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has identified the victim in Monday's drowning on Lake Lanier as Dinesh Thakorbhai Patel, 67, of Suwanee.

Original story posted Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 5:03 a.m.

After a quiet weekend on Lake Lanier, the holiday ended tragically with the death of a man in the water near a park in Buford.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokesman Mark McKinnon said game wardens were notified around 8:30 a.m. Monday that there was a body floating in the lake near East Bank Park.

"The body appears to be that of a middle-aged man and was recovered by Gwinnett County Fire," McKinnon wrote in an email Monday night. "The preliminary investigation from the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner indicates the man likely having a medical episode and then falling into the water and drowning."

McKinnon said once relatives can be notified, the name of the victim will be released.
