BUFORD — Buford rallied from an early deficit to knock off Class 7A No. 1-ranked North Gwinnett 7-2 on Saturday in the Hawk Invitational tournament at the Buford Softball Complex.
North Gwinnett scored two quick runs in the first off Emma Grace Williams. But the sophomore recovered to go the distance scattering five hits and walking none while fanning four.
The Lady Wolves (4-1) trailed 2-0 going into the third inning when Madison Pickens doubled in a run and Adriana Martinez knocked in a run and another score on a throwing error to give them a 3-2 lead. They added on in the fourth playing long ball.
Olivia Haag smashed a two-run homer, her first of her high school career, and Madison Pickens:followed with a solo shot two batters later to push the lead to 6-2. Olivia Duncan capped the scoring with a RBI single in the fifth.
Haag and Madison Pickens each finished with two hits, two RBI, and both scored a pair of runs to pace the offense.
Buford resumes play in the Hawk Invitational tournament on Saturday taking on Harris County in the morning.
