Gainesville to celebrate '96 games, Olympic venue

Posted 12:00PM on Saturday 31st July 2021 ( 3 years ago )

The city of Gainesville has two events lined up next Saturday to celebrate the 1996 Olympic Games that came through Gainesville.

On August 7, a Porch to Torch 5K Fun Run will start at City Park at 8 a.m.

"It's really a celebration of those local people that were torch bearers in 1996, so most of them are going to be coming out and they're going to lead the 5K," said Tourism Director Robyn Lynch.

That evening, a fundraising celebration will be held at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. The venue is the only one from the 1996 games still being used for its original purpose.

"This is really a time... to celebrate the venue and how to community came together in 1996," said Lynch.

The theme of the five Olympic rings create five distinct areas of the world.

"In each region you'll experience music, entertainment, food, beer and wine that represents that region," said Lynch. There will also be live music and a fireworks show to end the night.

Tickets are $100 per person and go towards planned updates at the venue, including the boat house.

Register for the 5K or get tickets for the celebration here.
