The unemployment rate for the Gainesville metro area increased in June, but other factors in the monthly jobs report are more promising, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that the unemployment rate for the one-county Gainesville MSA rose three-tenths of a point to 3%. A year ago, the jobless rate was 6.1%.

Despite the increase, Butler said Gainesville saw an increase in over-the-month and over-the-year jobs numbers.

"We are continuing to see an increase in the number of jobs available and very few actual reported layoffs through the WARN system, both good signs of an improving economy,” said Butler. “We must continue to work together to connect those seeking work with the many jobs available that offer stable salaries and competitive benefits.”

In other data released Thursday:

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 2,113 active job postings in Gainesville for June.
