Day three of the Georgia Police and Fire Games began with a competition to determine who was the "Toughest Cop."
At 8 a.m., 13 competitors representing eight agencies gathered at the Hall County Sheriff's Office Training Center for a safety briefing and a tour of the course.
The course consisted of a variety of tasks focusing on strength, cardio and precision.
Participants started with a 100-yard sprint to a combat shooting zone, where they had to shoot at steel targets with a rifle. After throwing a heavy sandbag over their shoulder, they proceeded to the next section of the course, where they engaged with more steel targets and flipped a 300-pound tire three times. After shooting a few more targets, they ran .5 mile, stopping intermittently to shoot at more targets.
"As their heart rate and respirations are going up, they have to maintain their accuracy," Lt. Stephen Wilbanks, who organized the event, said.
Wilbanks said the next task was perhaps the most difficult: pushing a police car for 50 feet.
Next, they ran to the front of the building and climbed several flights of stairs, then completed an obstacle course to return to the back of the building. After a few more quick shots, they dragged a 175-pound dummy 25 feet and finally completed the course.
"You can't be solely focused on strength or solely focused on cardio," Wilbanks said. "You have to have a pretty good balance of each to accomplish all the tasks."
