CORNELIA — Add regional titles to the resumes of a couple of Master’s Lifters from the Georgia IronDawgs Powerlifting team.
Veterans George Bradley of Gainesville and R. Garry Glenn of Oakwood went to the NE Georgia Bench Press and Deadlift Championships at the MHM Family Gym near Cornelia Saturday June 5 and came away with first place medals in their respective age and weight classes.
At 140 pounds in his raw bench-only class, the 64-year old Bradley finished with a press of 165 pounds, while at a body weight of around 200, the 67-year old Glenn locked out 305 lbs. in his raw class.
“(Meet Director) Joey (Murphy) called me a couple of months ago, and asked if I would lift in his meet, and it worked out that I could,” said Glenn. “Joey has lifted with us in the IronDawgs before and it was great to see him and some other folks as well. It’s always a pleasure to lift with George (Bradley). This is our first meet of the year; after I did only one all of last year because of concerns over the pandemic. This one was fun. We’ll wait and see how this year unfolds.
The Body by George team from George Herring’s gym in Loganville took home the team title.
“George (Herring) is an awesome trainer and the group he brought with him deserved the Team Championship,” Glenn said, noting he had lifted at a meet hosted by Herring last November, where he finished at 290 lbs.
“The 305 today was a true ‘Praise the Lord’ moment,” Glenn said. “I am very happy with that lift.”
Both Bradley and Glenn have numerous State, National, and World Titles to their credit. Glenn is a 1972 graduate of Jefferson High where he lettered in wrestling and football. He is a former Jefferson Junior High wrestling and football coach and a former Johnson High head wrestling and assistant football coach, as well as an award-winning long-time sports journalist.
The meet was a charity even with proceeds benefiting the local "Shop With a Cop" program for needy kids around Christmas-time.
