Athens authorities searching for suspect in fatal crash

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is asking for the public's help finding a suspect in a February car accident which resulted in the death of a Jefferson man.

The accident happened on Feb. 7, 2021, on Tallassee Road between Christa Lane and Ramble Hills Drive between a Jeep Wrangler and a Chevrolet Tahoe, according to a release from the department.

The driver of the Wrangler, Christopher Nix, 50, died from injuries sustained in the crash, and the driver of the Tahoe, Juan Manuel Romero Garrido, 40, was taken by EMS to a local hospital. Two passengers who were in the Wrangler at the time of the accident were also taken to a local hospital with serious injuries and were expected to survive.

On Wednesday, the department announced that Garrido has active arrest warrants for first-degree homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, DUI alcohol, failure to maintain lane and driving without a valid license.
