In an attempt to curb excessive false alarms generated by security systems, Gwinnett County officials have enacted a false alarm ordinance, and by July 1, any resident or business with a security system needs to make sure the system is registered with the police department.
In 2020, the Gwinnett County Police Department responded to approximately 22,450 alarm calls, but only 163 of those alarms were for valid emergencies, costing the county money and valuable time for the officers.
Under the new ordinance, false alarms will be subject to fees, starting at $25 for a first offense and increasing to $100 per offense after the fourth false alarm.
The new ordinance requires registration of security systems to be completed no later than July 1, 2021. Any resident or business that fails to do so will be required to pay an additional $25 fee for each false alarm that occurs. Even alarm sites that had been registered in the past are required to submit new registration forms. Registration can be completed online, by phone or by mail.
