A pedestrian was killed in White County on Saturday after attempting to cross State Route 75 just north of Cleveland.

Rosa Alba Perez, age 63 of Gainesville was trying to cross the road when she was struck and killed on the scene.

According to Sgt. Major Patterson with the Georgia State Patrol, a Nissan Frontier traveling northbound tried to avoid hitting Perez, but when the truck swerved, Perez also went in the same direction to avoid being hit. The driver of the vehicle could not avoid hitting the woman and then spun into oncoming lanes of traffic where the Nissan came to a rest on the shoulder of the road.

The driver of the truck, Katlyn Faith Mooney of Gainesville, stated that she didn’t see the pedestrian until the last moment due to traffic traveling in the opposite lanes, blocking her view. She only saw the woman after a red SUV passed her vehicle traveling southbound.

Sgt. Patterson added that Perez was not in any kind of crosswalk when she tried to cross the road.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be a factor in the crash. No charges are pending.
