The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners has approved a $6.2 million contract for expansion of the police training center on Winder Highway.

According to a statement sent this week by a county spokesperson, the expansion will include adding two stories for office space, training rooms and a multipurpose room with a physical ability course that meets Peace Officer Standards and Training Council requirements.

Gwinnett Police Chief Brett West said the expansion will help to accomodate the department, which has grown thirteen percent since the training facility opened in 2007.

“This much-needed expansion will allow us to continue to meet training standards and serve the community efficiently with well-trained officers as well as provide space for us to offer for more advanced certification classes for officers to hone their skills and advance within the department," said West.

Norcross-based Hogan Construction Group, LLC was the lowest of five bidders for the contract. No dates were given in the statement as to when the expansion might begin or reach completion.
