Hall County says Sardis Road Connector land acquisition on schedule

GAINESVILLE – Work on securing the needed right-of-way for the long-awaited Sardis Road Connector continues according to Hall County Public Works and Utilities Director Srikanth Yamala.

At Monday’s Hall County Commission work session Yamala brought to the commissioners a document termed a “Dedication” that will donate 0.97-acres on Brackett Drive to the Georgia Department of Transportation project.  The land is already owned by Hall County and is the street-side portion of the Sardis Compactor site.

The fact that nearly an acre of land will become part of the state road project is something that was considered when the compactor site was designed, Yamala explained, adding that it will not affect operations at the facility, one of Hall County’s most heavily used compactor sites.

“When we built the compactor site, the design, we already included the Sardis Road lay out,” Yamala said.  He explained that the measure presented to the commissioners was essentially a paper-work procedure officially changing the property from compactor site acreage to bypass project acreage. “We’re not losing any functionality from the compactor site.”

Hall County has been tasked with acquiring the right-of-way for the 3.5-plus mile bypass connecting SR 53 (Dawsonville Highway) at the Sardis Road and Chestatee Road intersection with SR 60 (Thompson Bridge Road) near Mount Vernon Road.

Yamala said that effort has been underway and is making on-time progress.

“The right-of-way acquisition is going well and is on schedule,” Yamala said. “We need a total of 159-parcels, out of which twelve have already been closed, ninety-eight parcels have been approved for negotiations and forty-nine are in the process of final appraisals.”

Yamala says that while the deadline for the county to secure all 159 needed parcels is two years away he did not see any major obstacles to having the task completed on time.
