UNG softball opens Southeast Regional with win over Anderson

DAHLONEGA — The No. 2 University of North Georgia softball team opened the 2021 NCAA Division II Softball Southeast Regional with a 3-1 win over Anderson Thursday afternoon at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park.

North Georgia got the scoring started in the third, plating a pair off an Olivia Sinquefield double down the line in left. UNG scored again in the fifth, pushing across Mariah Wicker on a wild pitch.

The Trojans struck back with a solo homer in the sixth by Kayson Boatner, but that was all AU could muster.

NOTES
- Kylee Smith (17-3) earned the win, fanning 15 while scattering three hits and two walks across the complete game.

- North Georgia has now won three straight regional openers.

- Anderson will play in the 6 p.m. elimination game against the loser of No. 5 Lincoln Memorial and No. 8 Young Harris.

NEXT UP
North Georgia will take on either the Railsplitters or the Mountain Lions on Friday at noon.
