Following the announcement that Mayor Danny Dunagan will not seek re-election to his post, Gainesville City Council Member Sam Couvillon has announced he will seek the mayoral seat.

Couvillon, who was first elected in 2013, said in a press release, "I want to continue our efforts with midtown and downtown revitalization, improving quality of life, and enhancing public safety for all.”

His goals included supporting community policing models, mental health training and awareness; improving the transportation network; and said he had a passion for education.

Outside of the city council, Couvillon is a benefits agent for Turner Wood and Smith Insurance, and is married with two children. His family attends Gainesville First United Methodist Church.
