The city of Flowery Branch has awarded a contract to begin installing signage around the downtown area.

City Manager Bill Andrew said officials have looked at the possibility of installing signage for a number of years, but finally took bids this year and received a number of offers. The city council voted Thursday to award the contract to Signs, etc. for just under $100,000.

The first phase of the signage is expected to be installed by late Summer or early Fall and will be mostly placed around the city hall and police department buildings. Later phases will expand to other parts of downtown, which Andrew said he hopes will add to the ongoing redevelopment of the area.

"We're really proud of what's going to be happening in downtown soon, so the sign plan will help get people here and seeing what we've got going on," Andrew said.

The city council approved the contract unanimously. Andrew also said the city plans to put future signs up in outer areas of the city such as Hog Mountain Road that will indicate the way to the downtown area or to the Spout Springs Library.
