BRASELTON – Lanier Raceplex is open and invites those who love driving, fast or faster, to experience racing firsthand, either against the clock or against friends.
Members of the South Hall Business Coalition were trackside Tuesday morning, being updated on the status of the nearly 40-year old racetrack by Kathryn “Kat” Richardson. Richardson is the Corporate Sales and Events Manager for Lanier Raceplex.
“A lot of people don’t know that we even exist,” Richardson said, straining to be heard over the noise coming across Winder Highway from Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta drivers taking practice laps. “So I’m here to tell you that we do.”
Richardson said that while Lanier Raceplex and Road Atlanta are distinct and separate businesses they often work together to promote the sport of road racing.
Originally opened in 1982 as Lanier National Speedway with a 3/8-mile oval dirt track, the facility was purchased in 2014 by road-racing champion Jim Downing. Downing removed the infield walls and buildings, repaved the entirety of the complex including the infield, and reopened as an “arrive-and-drive” kart racing facility with variable road-course configurations.
Track length can be varied from 0.3 to 1.2 miles and is changed often according to Richardson. “Our track is unique from other go-kart tracks because we are able to change our layout once a month as opposed to a (typical) static track…and we run it backwards every other week.”
Thirty-five Dino Karts are available for customer use, which on a straightaway can reach speeds of 60 mph. “We try not to put more than fifteen people out at a time,” Richardson said, explaining that driver safety was paramount.
Personal go-karts are welcome to run at the track, Richardson said, but that happens only on specially designated dates. Contact Lanier Raceplex for that information.
“We are open to the public, ages fifteen and up, on the weekends…but we do corporate and private events (during the week),” Richardson explained. “And we are looking to expand in our opportunities. If anyone is looking for a venue or a location that is outside, we are ready to go.”
Race pricing is affordable according to Richardson. “We do ten-minute heats…and a regular race is $35.” She explained that first-time racers receive a $15 price reduction.
“Hall County is an amazing place to live, work and play,” Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Brian Rochester said as he thanked Richardson for hosting the South Hall Business Coalition. “And this is one of those places that make it really fun to play.”
