Firefighters rescued a man from a structure fire in unincorporated Braselton Wednesday.
The fire happened on Davenport Road around 6:30 p.m., according to the West Jackson Fire Department.
West Jackson Fire Chief Ben Stephens said witnesses told them the man went back inside the house.
"They are assuming it was because he was trying to get pets out of the house," Stephens said.
Responding crews, including West Jackson, North Jackson Volunteer, Jackson Trail fire departments and Jackson County Correctional Institute made an aggressive interior attack while also searching for the victim.
Stephens said two Jackson Trail firefighters, Lt. Nate Shuler and FAO Chris Spruill, pulled the man from the home through a front window.
"He was unconscious when we pulled him from the house," said Stephens. The man suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported by Jackson County EMS to an area hospital. Thursday evening the West Jackson Fire Department confirmed that the victim died after succumbing to his injuries.
The Georgia State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating, but Stephens said initial information indicates the fire was accidental.
