Demorest residents charged after abandoned puppies found dead

Two abandoned puppies died agonizing deaths at a rental property in Habersham County recently, and a pair of Demorest residents face felony charges in the incident, an official said.

Amber Rogers Kelley, 29, and Daniel Adam English, 21, both are charged with two counts each of aggravated cruelty to animals and abandonment of a domesticated animal.

Habersham County Animal Care and Control Director Madi Nix said the arrests resulted from an abandonment call received after the property was vacated and the landlord was cleaning out the property from the previous tenants.

“Two puppies were found deceased,” Nix said. “One was in a doghouse in the backyard and the other one was enclosed in an outbuilding. By the amount of feces in that outbuilding, it appeared that it had been in there for weeks.”

The puppies were terrier mix, though decomposition made it difficult to determine a lot of specifics.

Toxicology and necropsies were performed to determine what is known about the animals.

“About 16 weeks old,” Nix said. “The lab was able to give us an approximate age. Both died due to starvation. It’s a bad way to die for anything to have to suffer like that.”

Kelley and English were booked in at the Habersham County Detention Center Friday night.
