An unnamed street on the campus of Gainesville Exploration Academy will now be named after a former NASA astronaut.

General Roy Bridges was a member of the Gainesville High School graduating class of 1961. As a member of NASA, piloted the space shuttle Challenger in July 1985.

Gainesville Exploration Academy is the only school in the district that partners with NASA and specializes in a curriculum that incorporates science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The street is located between McEver Road and Spring Road.

“Gainesville Exploration Academy, a NASA Explorer school, is honored to name our street after astronaut General Roy Bridges, a GHS alumni and a real-life hero,” Principal Renee Boatright said.

The Gainesville City School Board voted to approve the naming at their meeting Monday night.
