All of the many ranked teams in the northeast Georgia area are off to hot starts in their respective regions as the baseball season steams ahead.
In Region 8-6A, Buford, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A and fourth nationally, still sits atop the standings at 5-0 while Habersham Central is third at 4-1 and both will wrap up key series on Friday.
In Region 8-4A, the three ranked teams -- No. 1 North Oconee, No. 2 Flowery Branch, No. 6 Jefferson -- all are off to 2-0 starts atop the region. The rest of the region is still looking for their first wins.
It’s a similar start in Region 7-3A, where No. 2 North Hall, West Hall, and White County all have opened with 2-0 starts. No. 4 Cherokee Bluff opens its region schedule next week against West Hall.
Gainesville has gotten off to a rough start in a tough Region 6-7A being outscored 17-1 in a pair of losses to No. 6 Lambert and the Red Elephants open a series against No. 7 North Forsyth on Friday at Ivey-Watson.
Region 8-2A opened this week as well with Banks County and Elbert County off to quick starts. Both face doubleheaders on Friday.
Class A Public No. 7 Commerce is off to a 4-0 start with unranked Towns County right behind at 3-0 so far.
Region 8-5A, where Jackson County currently leads in wins at 10-3, opens next week with Loganville (No. 1 in Class 5A) and Greenbrier (No. 7). It figures to be a tough battle with all but one of the eight teams having a winning record as they get ready for region play.
