North Georgia COVID cases down, vaccine availability rises

Posted 6:48AM on Tuesday 9th March 2021 ( 3 years ago )

Numbers of new cases of COVID-19 in Northeast Georgia are continuing to trend downward.

As of Monday afternoon, just 67 people were hospitalized in Northeast Georgia Health System facilitiesm, according to the NGHS website. That's a number that's been dropping steadily since the first of the month.

Because hospitalizations are dropping, more beds are available. The health system has 100 beds open at its four hospitals.

Hospitalization topped 350 in January, and there were days where no beds were available in Gainesville or Braselton.

The news comes on the heels of the expansion of COVID-19 vaccination availability. Georgia started vaccinating teachers and school employees on Monday as more doses of the vaccine become available. Teachers in Hall County and Gainesville will be able to get their shots later this week during vaccination clinics sponsored by their districts.
