Tennis: Region showdowns highlight big Tuesday on the courts

GAINESVILLE — Both North Hall tennis teams earned their first wins of the season on Tuesday, sweeping West Hall in Region 7-3A action.

The boys dropped just eight games in a 5-0 win with Clay Martin, Nate Marshall, and Jaycob Wagner all taking 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles. The No. 1 doubles team of Hunter Pierce and Luis Delgado held off the Spartans’ Davis Pritchard and Brayden Blum 6-4 6-2 and the No. 2 doubles team of Austin Wallhausen and Stephen Sartain beat Wesley Lecroy and Flynn Thompson 6-1, 6-1.

For the girls, the Lady Trojans’ doubles teams of AnaGrace Stephens and Anna Reeves and Ali Moore and Kayla Miller both won 6-0, 6-0. In singles, Gabbie Jenkins held off Madison Blum 7-5, 6-1, Riley Morgan beat Lillian Bird 6-2,  6-2, and Callie Clark knocked off Faith Gibbs 6-1, 6-3.

Both North Hall teams will play host to Elbert County on Wednesday.

WALNUT GROVE 2

The Knights took a tough Region 8-5A victory at home on Tuesday.

Allan Garcia took a three-set win at No. 2 singles (7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4)) and Leandro Cupps won at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-3. The No. 1 doubles team of  Levi McBride also needed three sets with a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory to clinch the match.


WALNUT GROVE GIRLS 3,
JOHNSON 2

The Lady Knights dropped a tough match in Region 8-5A.

Olivia Carpenter and Zoey Blankenship both too straight set wins in singles but Walnut Grove swept the doubles dropping just three games.

The match came down to No. 3 singles where Lucy Bagwell lost in three sets 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (1-0-4).


FLOWERY BRANCH SWEEPS EAST HALL

The Lady Falcons dropped just two games while the Branch boys lost just 10 games in taking a Region 8-4A sweep at home on Tuesday.

In the girls match, Alyssa McSpadden, Sandra Hernandez, and Julianna Velaj all took 6-0, 6-0 wins. In the doubles, Madison Sedwick and Polina Chernikova won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 and the No. 2 team of Katie Martin and Savannah Regnier won 6-0, 6-0.

For the boys, Will Hernandez, Jack Thomas, and Caden Caldwell all took 6-0, 6-0 wins while the No. 1 doubles of Grant Anglin and Josh Warren got a tight 6-4, 6-4 win over Alex Perez and Joel Navar. The No. 2 Branch doubles of Santino Sengson and Mason Foreman won 6-2, 6-0.


BUFORD OPENS 8-6A WITH SWEEP OF LANIER

Buford opened Region 8-6A play with a road sweep in Sugar Hill.

The boys took a 5-0 win while the girls won 4-1.

For the boys, Dean Kingsley, James Troutt, and Matthew Maurer took straight-set victories. In doubles, Nic Keller and Leyton Grothe won a close match at No. 1 and Brent Sherman and Grayson Gilbert won at No. 2.

The girls only loss was at No. 1 singles. The Lady Wolves dropped just seven games over the other four matches, however. Taylor Aycock and Berkley Clark won in straight sets at the other two singles.

In doubles, Kennedy Deloach and Kylie McCammon won at No. 1 and the No. 2 team of Sophie Brewer and Taylor Ryzcek, both matches in straight sets.

Buford's Dean Kingsley helped the Wolves take a Region 8-6A win over Lanier on Tuesday.
