Woman killed in overnight house fire in Gwinnett County

A woman died in an overnight house fire in Duluth, according to officials with the Gwinnett County Fire Department.

Capt. Tommy Rutledge said fire crews arrived at the scene of the burning house on Whitney Park Drive at 1:54 a.m. Tuesday, March 2. 

"Initial reports of an elderly female trapped inside were confirmed," Rutledge said in an email statement. "Flames were intense as firefighters entered the house in an attempt to rescue the trapped victim from a back bedroom. The woman was removed from the upstairs bedroom during the primary search and was transported to the hospital with injuries."

Rutledge said the woman died from her injuries at a local hospital. 

Rutledge said an elderly make occupant of the home and a caretaker were able to escape the fire. The caretaker was evaluated at the scene by paramedics. 

The name of the victim has not yet been released to the public.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. The house and the contents were heavily damaged.
