Following his stint as Ninth District Congressman, Doug Collins has taken on a new role at a Clarkesville law firm.
Collins announced Thursday he will join Oliver & Weidner, LLC in Clarkesville. He will specialize in civil and criminal litigation.
“I’m thrilled to announce that I have joined Oliver & Weidner,” said Collins. “Bill and Jim have long been friends and are well respected for the service they provide to families and businesses here in our community. North Georgia will always be home for me, which is why I’m especially thankful for the opportunity to return to practicing law right here in Clarkesville.”
"We are very excited that Doug joined our firm,” said managing member, Jim Weidner. "I've known Doug for over 25 years, he is a quality individual. He is an excellent advocate; his honesty and integrity are rock solid; and his work ethic is extraordinary. Our clients will be well served by Doug's representation of them," Weidner added.
Collins finished third behind Senator Rev. Raphael Warnock and former Senator Kelly Loeffler in the 2020 special election to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of Johnny Isakson. A runoff between Loeffler and Warnock resulted in a win for Warnock.
In an interview with the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Collins said he was looking to challenge either Governor Brian Kemp or Warnock when they are up for reelection in 2022.
“We’ve got a good background. People in the state know us,” Collins said in an interview. “Am I open to considering a run for the Senate or governor? Yes,” Collins told the paper.
Collins is a Gainesville native. He was first elected to Georgia's 27th House State District in 2006. Collins received his juris doctorate in 2007, shortly after he was first elected as a Congressman, and established his own law practice. He was elected to the Ninth District in 2013. Prior to his law and political career, he served as the pastor of Chicopee Baptist Church. He is still active as a Lieutenant Colonel and as a chaplain in the Air Force Reserves, joining in 2002.
Oliver & Weidner was formed in 2006 by Bill Oliver and Weidner. Retired Chief Superior Court Judge Bucky Woods joined the firm in 2010. The firm practices all levels of federal and state court systems throughout the state, including the Supreme Court of the United States.
