GAINESVILLE — The Chestatee girls wrestling team captured the first-ever Georgia High School Association girls wrestling championship last week.
Coach Scott DeGraff summed it up succinctly: "It has a nice ring to it!"
It was the third year that the GHSA had offered the girls their own division, but it was the first time it had ever been scored for a state title. DeGraff said it took most everyone by surprise.
"We didn't learn until about halfway through that they were actually scoring it," he said. "We looked at the scores and saw we were in fifth and a shot. But we didn't tell the girls because we didn't want to put any extra pressure on them. They did a tremendous job."
Sophomore 225-pound wrestler Isabella Redlinger captured her first, and the program's first, state title as well.
"I still can't believe that I'm a state champion," Redlinger said. "But this will motivate me to work harder for next year. It's just great for the program."
