STATE CHAMPS! Chestatee girls pin down first state wrestling title

MACON — The Chestatee girls wrestling team secured the school’s first-ever team state title holding off a half-dozen top contenders in the girls state meet Thursday at the Macon Centreplex.

Chestatee finished with 103 total points with Alexander out of Douglas County taking second with 89. Greenbrier, near Augusta, took third with 86 points.

The Lady War Eagles held a slim lead going into the second day and Isabella Redlinger sealed it with a win over Osborne’s Kiarra Nylander in the 225-pound finals for the individual state title.

Redlinger was the only individual champion for Chestatee, but Catarina Velasquez (102) and Ashley Godinez (152) both finished second for the Lady War Eagles.

Jackson County finished sixth with 74 points and was paced by Raven Cook, who took third at 132, and a fourth-place finish from Lilly Chavis at 225.

Johnson placed 12th with 39 points as Anna Santoscoy (102) and Litzy Soto (142) both turned in top six performances.

East Hall finished 20th with 30.5 points behind Alivia Myers fourth-place finish at 162.

White County’s Sidney Sullens won the 152 title state title with a win over Chestatee’s Godinez in the finals. The Lady Warriors managed a 30th-place finish with 26 points.

Lumpkin County was 19th (31 points), Cherokee Bluff was 43rd with 19 points, West Hall tied for 54th, North Hall tied for 64th, Towns County tied for 71st, and Union County tied for 79th as more than 120 programs statewide fielded teams that scored points, the most ever in the girls state meet.
