Wrestling: Defending champs lead after opening day in 5A and 7A

MACON — The last of the 2021 Georgia High School Association Traditional wrestling championships got under way on Friday as Class 5A and Class 7A opened their tournaments, including three northeast Georgia area teams.

In a brutally tough Class 5A, Jackson County had nine wrestlers advance to the finals and Johnson had five. But neither could pusha wrestler into any of the 14 individual finals.

Woodland-Cartersville and Cass dominated the opening day with each sending six into the championship matches. Woodland led Cass by just 1 1/2 points (172.5 to 171).

Jackson County sits 11th with 58.5 points and Johnson is 24th with 26 points. Both team will be back in action on Saturday morning (9 a.m.).

In Class 7A, Gainesville sent a strong contingent but also was unable to have anyone advance to the championship matches.

The Red Elephants are in 27th place with 34 points after Day 1 action. Five-time defending state champion Camden County once again leads with a nearly 60-point lead 193.5) over second place West Forsyth (135.5).
